Burundi Refugees Arrive In Nashville
Thursday, October 11, 2007 |
According to the UN refugee agency UNHCR, thousands of Burundian refugees are resettling in the US after spending nearly three decades in Tanzania. Their arrival in the US is part of a massive program to reduce the number of displaced people in Western Tanzania.
Burundian refugees began arriving in the US in early summer of 2007, and many have been relocated to Nashville TN, where they find assistance through African Leadership’s Refugee Ministry. Our Refugee Ministry Director is William Mwizera, who organizes English as Second Language classes, clothing distributions and every other aspect of the refugees adjustments to this new culture.
Some 200,000 Burundians are currently living in UN refugee camps in Tanzania.
